SFG was initiated by several professionals at the forefront of sustainable finance who saw in the organization the opportunity to create synergies and positive dynamics among people working on this issue. After several months of discussion, the first articles of the association were signed in November 2007. SFG was officially launched the 28th of October 2008.

The Steering Committee is currently made up of sixteen professionals active in various areas of sustainable finance. These heads and managers of consulting companies, members of international organizations, rating agencies and financial services form a highly qualified and experienced team able to bring SFG to international recognition.

A six-member Executive Committee is responsible for the strategic directions of the association while a part-time staff member is responsible for overseeing the every-day tasks of SFG. SFG is an independent organization, and actively works for the international promotion of sustainable finance.
